*Please note: Low muscle mass is a critical feature of sarcopenia and cachexia. Sarcopenia is associated with decreased survival and increased complications in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Sarcopenia is defined by SMI cutoffs, which may vary across studies according to sex and BMI. Here we use the following cutoffs: Males with BMI below 30: SMI of 47.0; Males with BMI above 30: SMI of 54.0; Females with BMI below 30: SMI of 38.0; Females with BMI above 30: SMI of 47.0.
